FAQs for the Dr

Is COVID-19 still a threat?
Unfortunately COVID continues to circulate in our environment. The good news is unlike a few years ago we now have a lot of tools to minimize risk of severe disease from COVID
What tools exist to prevent severe disease?
  • The most important shield is immunity. This comes in two forms, either through vaccination, or natural infection.
  • The antibodies that result after a natural COVID infection may not necessarily last long enough or be specific enough to each new COVID variant, so vaccination is still recommended
  • Another important factor is protection against exposure. That means distancing from those who have COVID until their quarantine period is over.
  • Pre exposure prophylaxis is medication that’s given to high risk individuals who may not respond well to vaccines. Evusheld is a type of injected medication that may be recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions
  • Medications against COVID are antiviral medicines and monoclonal antibodies
    • Antiviral medications include Lagevrio, Paxlovid and Veklury
    • Monoclonal antibodies include bebtelovimab
What are other ways to prevent COVID infection that do not include medication?
  • Distancing from those with known COVID exposure
  • Masking and isolating when you have tested positive to avoid getting others sick
  • Testing after developing symptoms or having a known exposure
What vitamins or medications can someone take to avoid getting sick with COVID?
  • It’s important to focus on overall health including a balanced diet and physical exercise. Obesity increases risk of severe disease with COVID so having a health weight and blood pressure are important to stay protected.
  • Those with any chronic medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure should continue taking their medications. Having these conditions well controlled is also important to decrease risk of severe COVID
  • There are no recommended vitamins or supplements that can help reduce risk of COVID.
  • Washing hands, increasing distance and space and avoiding known exposure are also great tools to help stay healthy.
